Air Canada, Canada’s largest airline, announced today that it would be adding service from their West Coast hub in Vancouver to two new European cities. Next summer, Air Canada will begin flights to Paris, France and Zurich, Switzerland from Vancouver. Both routes will be served seasonally June through October.
Both cities will be served with a Boeing 787 Dreamliner; however, Air Canada has not specified whether the flights will be flown by the 787-8 or 787-9. It appears more likely that it will be the 787-9 because Air Canada currently has 21, with eight more on order, compared to only eight 787-8s.
In Paris, Air Canada will add Vancouver in addition to its already daily flights to its other two hubs in Toronto and Montreal. The new Vancouver to Paris route will commence on June 8th, 2018 and will stop for the season on October 15th. Canadian leisure airline Air Transat also flies this route seasonally in addition to Air France’s year round service. The flight will depart Vancouver at 13:30 (1:30 PM) Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday and arrive in Paris at 08:15 (8:15 AM) the following day. The return flight will depart Paris at 09:55 (9:55 AM) and arrive at 10:50 (10:50 AM)
Currently, Zurich only receives Air Canada service from Toronto. The new flight to Zurich from Vancouver will connect Canadians to one of the largest Star Alliance hubs in Europe as passengers can connect to almost anywhere in Europe on Swiss Airlines. The Vancouver to Zurich route will begin on June 7th, 2018 and operate through October 14th. The Zurich flight will depart Vancouver at 12:55 (12:55 PM) on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday and arrive in Zurich at 07:50 (7:50 AM) the next day. The return flight will depart Zurich at 09:30 (9:30 AM) and arrive back in Vancouver at 10:50 (10:50 AM). Swiss leisure carrier Edelweiss currently flies this route on a seasonal basis.
As of now, Air Canada’s only year round European route from Vancouver is London, with Frankfurt being added during the summer. The addition of these two routes will double the number of European destinations that Air Canada serves from Vancouver.
In addition to the European additions, Air Canada will move to year round service to Melbourne, Australia. The route from Vancouver is currently only served during the Canadian winter months of the year, but will go to year round in June of 2018. It will be operated three times a week
It was announced in late April that it would begin a route from Vancouver to Delhi, India in October of this year. Originally, the flight was only scheduled to operate three times weekly, but strong bookings have prompted Air Canada to add an additional two weekly flights between Vancouver and Delhi.
