Iceland’s national carrier, Icelandair, will begin service to Dublin next year, with the Emerald Isle’s capital city becoming the airline’s 50th gateway. Flights will operate six-times weekly using Icelandair’s Boeing 757-200 aircraft.

Icelandair’s service will join the currently operated Reykjavík – Dublin service operated by fellow Icelandic carrier WOW Air, which operates five-times weekly during the winter and daily during the summer.

Unlike many other countries, it operates to, this is Icelandair’s first scheduled foray into the Irish market and it is following WOW Air, which possesses two years experience operating from Dublin year-round. WOW recently expanded their offering with a Cork service, and competition is bound to be stiff between the airlines during next year’s summer season.

Both carriers market Iceland as a stopover destination, but Icelandair’s “#MyStopover” effort has been greatly received, with the carrier offering up to seven days spread between connections without a change in airfare. To accompany the local marketing, “Hekla Aurora”, a specially themed 757, flies as the #MyStopover flagship. Alongside its stopover service, it’s standard connecting service is world renowned, a market it’s low-cost competitor is keen to dig into.

Icelandair is the 22nd carrier to announce a new Dublin service since 2010. Dublin Airport’s Managing Director Vincent Harrison was keen to outline what this new service brings to Dublin’s already colourful offering, saying in an interview with RTÉ.ie that “this new service will also provide additional options for North American visitors to get to Ireland, which is great news for the Irish tourism sector and the many thousands of businesses that it supports throughout the country.”

Dublin now joins Dallas and Cleveland as new Icelandair destinations announced this year, along with other European service increases.
