Routes of the Week: May 7th, 2017

Every day, airlines around the world launch new routes, some with little fanfare, others with great fanfare. Regardless of their status, we collect the most interesting routes announced each week, and share them with you here.

Routes Announced This Week (May 1st – May 7th)

Air Canada rouge: Montreal – Lima

Linking Montreal and the Southern Hemisphere for the first time, Air Canada rouge will be beginning flights to Lima on December 16th, 2017, for the winter season (until May 27th, 2018 Lima Departure). Flights will operate using Air Canada rouge’s Boeing 767-300ER aircraft, twice weekly. This service will complement Air Canada’s current service between Toronto and Lima that operates four times a week.

Air Canada rouge: Canada – Belize City / St. Vincent / Phoenix / Orlando

In more firsts, Air Canada rouge will be expanding its winter schedule to include a number of flights to the U.S., Central America and the Caribbean. Flights will be operated by Airbus A319 aircraft, besides the Vancouver – Orlando flight, which will be operated by Boeing 767-300ER aircraft. The service to Belize City will be Air Canada’s first service to Belize, while the service to St. Vincent will be the only nonstop passenger service operating to the airport at that time.

Air Canada: Vancouver – Melbourne

Air Canada announced the beginning of service between Vancouver and Melbourne starting December 1st, 2017, the first time that the airline has operated to Melbourne since 2002 (when Air Canada operated a Toronto – Honolulu – Melbourne service). The airline will operate the route with its new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, which will fly four times a week until February 4th, 2018 (Melbourne departure).

The beaches of Fort Lauderdale are now closer to Salt Lake City, with JetBlue’s new non-stop flight between the two cities.

JetBlue: Fort Lauderdale – Salt Lake City

JetBlue will be flying between its hub in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Salt Lake City starting on November 16th, 2017. The flight is the first one linking Fort Lauderdale and Salt Lake City, and will operate daily. The inbound and outbound flights from Fort Lauderdale are timed to connect to flights to Central America and the Caribbean, making this option an attractive choice to those accustomed to flying through larger hubs, or through two stops to reach their destination. Flights will be operated by JetBlue’s all-economy Airbus A320 aircraft.

Competing for its share of travelers headed to Florida this year, SAS will begin flights between Stockholm and Miami for the winter 2017/18 season.

SAS: Stockholm – Miami

Turning up the heat against Norwegian Air, SAS announced the beginning of flights between Stockholm and Miami for the winter season, starting October 29th, 2017 and ending March 4th, 2018. Flights will operate once weekly, using SAS’ Airbus A330-300 aircraft. With this, SAS will operate from its three hubs to Miami this winter: Copenhagen in Denmark, Oslo in Norway, and Stockholm in Sweden.

Buenos Aires and Newark are once again linked by United Airlines starting this winter.

United: Newark – Buenos Aires

Ending United’s hiatus operating between the New York City area and Buenos Aires, United will resume service on the Newark – Buenos Aires route starting October 28th, 2017 (Newark departure). Flights will operate daily, using United’s Boeing 767-300ER aircraft. The flight’s departure and arrival times in Newark are timed to connect to other services throughout the United States and Canada, and as most flights between North and South America, will operate during the night.

United will compete with Skyteam member Aerolineas Argentinas on the route, as well as with Oneworld member American Airlines.
